George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center is a unique combination of a museum and a community center. It was established in 1980 in the heart of the Black Cultural District of the city. The area’s name refers to the size of the “negro district” in the 1928 city plan, which institutionalized racial segregation. This unique combination of history and progressive community resources makes the Carver Museum a unique cultural resource in the area.
The museum is in need of a complete renovation. The city council approved a plan for the new campus in June, which will include two floors dedicated to exhibitions, a special events ballroom, a 500-seat theater, and a new parking structure.
